Marigold's benefit is more specific than most gardeners assume: certain marigold species (particularly French marigold cultivars) have documented suppressive effects on specific root-knot nematode populations in the soil, which is a real, if narrow, mechanism rather than a general pest-repellent effect against everything above ground. Nasturtium's role is the clearest of the three - it works as a genuine trap crop, drawing aphids onto itself and away from the tomato plant, a documented and fairly well-understood effect.
